Karl Barth:
One of the chief architects of the Barmen Declaration, the document published by a group of German pastors against the hypocrisy and heresy of the German church that cooperated with the Nazis, reportedly finished his work on the document while “fortified by strong coffee and one or two Brazilian cigars.” My kind of theologian. Must read his books.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer earned his doctorate at 21. His older brother was on the research team that first split the atom.  What am I doing wasting my time on tumblr?

It is
Clear, cold mountain streams, and the razor-keen scent of pine on a crisp breeze. It is the crunch of midwinter snow and the glitter of midwinter sun. It is the noble fatigue etched in the face of the working man, and in the face of his wife, and it is their love for their children. It is the wild, joyous abandon of those children at play. It is the passion of a young man betrothed, and the...

My Church:
I love my church. It’s just awesome. Certainly, no church is perfect, since they’re all full of already-but-not-yet-resurrected-fallen-men, but mine comes close. There’s a magnificent, Christ-loving, God-honoring joy in it, a warm hospitality that leads to a Christ-based unity that makes it so that a college sophomore studying history has the same common ground with a petroleum...

The Zombie Apocalypse.
bochomeansround: Recently, I have been turned on to a TV series that airs on AMC.   Some of my friends let me borrow their DVD of the first season just yesterday.  The show is called The Walking Dead. A small town police officer falls into a coma after being shot in a grand theft auto pursuit.  Upon awakening, he finds himself in an abandoned hospital in his now equally abandoned hometown. ...

mikeclevenger: The best argument for Christianity is Christians: their joy, their certainty, their completeness.  But the strongest argument against Christianity is also Christians — when they are somber and joyless, when they are self-righteous and smug in complacent consecration, when they are narrow and repressive, then Christianity dies a thousand deaths. -Joe Aldrich

The Consolation of Philosophy →
As much as I don’t usually enjoy philosophy done by most early Christians (why seek truth by philosophy/reason when it’s already been revealed in scripture?) I am thoroughly enjoying Boethius’ The Consolation of Philosophy, Book V. It’s pretty dense reading, but if you’d like a headache from trying to wrap your mind around the relationship between divine foreknowledge...

“They can have a statement of faith as long as they don’t act on it.”
– Gary White, Vanderbilt University Religious Life Director Apparently it’s only OK to believe something if you don’t really believe it. This brewing issue at Vanderbilt may be one of the few issues it’s actually worth making a V for Vendetta reference about.

Hm.
Fell asleep while taking notes in the last class, but my hand kept moving. What I learned from that is that while my conscious mind is taking notes in Symbolic Logic, my subconscious is still busily turning over the last episode of NCIS I watched right before class, and will happily write about it if it can just get my consciousness distracted enough to take over my hands.

Personally,
I don’t get politics. They make me angry, because they seem to be needlessly divisive, especially within the body of Christ. Who can say with certainty that Right or Left is absolutely correct? Both have their hate-filled invective-spewers (I hesitate to call them human beings, though I guess the term can be applied loosely) and both have their well-informed, intelligent proponents as well. ...

– Benjamin Netanyahu, in an address to the Knesset on Monday. Moral of the story: do not, under any circumstances, screw with the Israelis. You can debate whether they’re serious or just counter-threatening to various things other nations in the region have said, but if I were an anti-Israel...
