“Have you grace to be a martyr?” D. L. Moody was once asked. “No,” he replied, “I...”

I haven’t written a good poem, I mean one I was really proud of and could say, yeah, I nailed my vision on that, in a long time. I want to do that again soon. Badly.

Ok, the novelty of having a lame arm and wearing a sling has officially worn off. I want my arm back.

Thoughts for today:
True understanding of the Word comes only from the Holy Spirit. Without it, the Word is a collection of myths, moral stories, and good advice. But with it—ah, with the Holy Spirit— the Word is life and peace. No one who has not exerienced it can fathom it. I have decided that it is better to be in slightly more pain, and be in my right mind, than to eliminate the pain, and surrender...

I would type more
Because today has been an interesting day, but typing with one hand is very slow. Truncated summary: -Awake, 5:15 -Shower with nasty pre-surgery soap -Dress in sweats and fuzzy crocs. Oh yes. -Leave for hospital, 6:10 -Check in, read Monte Cristo for 30 minutes. -Taken to pre-op room. Forced to don compromising gown. -Told to watch tv to relax myself. Only show on? Something...

Miniver Cheevy
I think one of my favorite things to do is smoke a pipe with my dad. We’ve only done it a couple of times, because I only turned 18 about a month ago, and because it’s probably a stupid thing to make a habit out of. But it pretty much rocks. We don’t even really talk about anything. We just sit outside with our pipes, while the aromatic smoke curls around our heads. It makes me...

It's rather depressing
That the accomplishments that made our digital age possible have been turned into a tourist site for croc-wearing camera-toting travelers, rather than the busy, thriving center where the best and the brightest of a generation push the boundaries of human achievement. Let me explain. Spent all day today touring the Kennedy Space Center. Disgusting. Those brave men and women went to entirely new...

Things I learned on the beach:
If a sandcastle is left unattended, it will be promptly destroyed by a) waves or b) punk tourist kids Surfing is actually pretty easy. The stance is just enough similar to a wrestling stance to make it simple. Some people should not be allowed to choose the type of swimsuit they wear. They should be swathed in the most opaque and large bolts of cloth available.

Tolkien was right.
The sea has a sound to it. A song. It sings to me here, a sighing that stirs deep remembrance within me, even melancholy. It seems to me that many have experienced the same feeling, of smallness, of longing for something greater. I know this longing to be a longing for heaven, for the final restoration. Perhaps there was a sea beside the place where man left the Garden, and as Adam and Eve left...

Surgery?
So, I finally got in to have my shoulder evaluated today. Went to a new surgeon, which was good. He found out more about my shoulder, and told me more about it, in five minutes, than the old doc did in a few hours last summer. So, I’m now scheduled for shoulder surgery on June 15th. Goodbye, summer backpacking trips and weight lifting. :( On the bright side, I should be able to put a dent...
